HONOAPI'ILANI HIGHWAY RELOCATION

Support for Highway Realignment with Emphasis on West Maui Greenway Connectivity

We recognize and support the relocation of a 6.5 -miles segment of Honoapiʻilani Highway mauka to safeguard this vital transportation corridor against the impacts of rising sea levels and climate change. This realignment plays a critical role in West Maui’s recovery, resilience, and future sustainability.
  1. Utilization of the Old Highway 30 for WMG Segments 6 and 7 (ref WMG master plan pages 111 and 51):
    1. Repurposing the current coastal highway as a dedicated bike and pedestrian path would create a safe, scenic multi-use trail. This is a cost-effective way to implement Segments 6 and 7 of the WMG, contributing to a continuous path connecting communities across West Maui.
  2. Alignment with Climate and Community Goals:
    • Incorporating the WMG within this project would align with the goals outlined in the Nā Wahine Climate Settlement Agreement and reinforce Maui’s commitment to sustainable, multi-modal transportation infrastructure.
  3. Community-Driven Design:
    • By transforming the old highway into a recreational and commuting pathway, this project can provide a lasting community asset that supports health, recreation, and economic recovery.
    • Olowalu: The Road to Resilience is an initiative led by the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, The Nature Conservancy, and The University of Hawaiʻi Community Design Center to engage the community and stakeholders in the development of a proof-of-concept design for the coastal area stretching approx. 6 miles from Ukumehame to Launiupoko.

The Maui Bicycling League supports the realignment effort and does not oppose the current plan. However, we respectfully request that the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) prioritizes the conversion of the former highway route into a bike and pedestrian trail.
