West Maui Greenway was identified as a priority project in numerous previous planning efforts.
Maui MPO received federal funding for the development of a Master Plan, and worked with Alta Planning & Design and SSFM International (Project Consultant Team) to develop the West Maui Greenway Master Plan from 2021 - 2022. The Master Plan was completed in September 2022 and outlines:

- Design guidance: greenway typologies, path fundamentals & elements
- Management and implementation strategies as well as next steps for the greenway

West Maui Community Corridor Plan - focuses on multimodal improvements to a 3.6 mile stretch of the Honoapi'ilani Highway from Lahaina to Kaanapali.
Honoapi'ilani Highway Realignment - focuses on realignment of a 4.5 mile stretch of Honoapi'ilani Highway from Ukumehame to the southern terminus of Lahaina Bypass, to address vulnerability to sea level rise and coastal erosion. $45 million in federal grants will help offset total cost estimate of $90 million.
